Understanding the Wind Window is important for managing the power of the kite and how it’s being affected by the wind.

The Wind Window is defined relative to the pilot.  The Wind Window is the three dimensional region of sky downwind of the pilot in which the kite can be flown. When facing downwind, the wind window is roughly all the area the you can see.

There are three main zones within the Wind Window:

  1. The Edge of the Wind Window is where the kite generates the least power.
  2. The Intermediate Zone is where the kite generates medium power.
  3. The Power Zone is where the kite generates maximum power.

Here’s a very good video explaining all you need to know about the wind window. Even though it’s based on a kitesurfer’s point of view, any kite flyer can make good use of it!
